The Solid Waste Disposal Department is responsible for recycling and waste disposal for the City of Salem.

Types of waste accepted

1. Agricultural
2. Commercial
3. Industrial
4. Residential
5. Construction Debris
6. Appliances free of compressed gas

Types of waste not accepted

1. Free liquids
2. Regulated Hazardous Waste
3. Solid waste residues or soils containing more than 1.0 p.p.h of dioxin, residues or soils containing 50.0 p.p.b. or more of PCPs.
4. Sludges
5. Pesticide containers that have not been triple rinsed and crushed
6. Drums that are not empty, properly cleaned and opened
7. Regulated medical waste or residue from the processing or treatment of regulated medical waste
8. Asbestos containing material
9. Materials prohibited from sanitary landfill disposal unless the material can safely be introduced into the city's recycling program

Anyone delivering unauthorized waste to the city's Solid Waste Management Facility will be responsible for its removal and proper disposal.

Recycling

The City’s Recycling Program consists of three operations:

• Residential drop-off
• Commercial Recyclable Material collections, and
• co-operative recycling efforts.
  

The citizen’s collection operation is comprised of two full service drop-off centers. One located at 1271 Indiana Street (across from the Street and General Maintenance Department), and one in the Wal-Mart parking lot on West Main Street. These full service centers accept plastic #1 and #2, bi-metal and aluminum containers, mixed paper (phone books, reading books, magazines, junk mail, and envelopes) as well as newspaper. Because newspapers normally accumulate faster and take up more space, citizens are provided with an additional convenient newspaper drop-off site located in the parking lot adjacent to the City's Court House. In addition, corrugated cardboard is accepted at the Transfer Station on Indiana Street.

Effective August 1, 2007 the City has discontinued accepting glass to recycle. A viable market for recycled glass is being researched and when one becomes available the City will restart that program.
